Acne is a very common skin problem experienced by most men and women during adolescence, but also in adulthood. The resulting skin imperfections affect the pores (whiteheads, blackheads) following inflammation (spots, pustules), or more deeply to form cysts and nodules. Acne is caused by a hormonal imbalance that causes excessive sebum secretion by the sebaceous glands. On the surface, the openings of these glands become clogged and sebum accumulates below the skin. This oily substance encourages the proliferation of the bacterium  Propionibacterium acnes, which leads to inflammation of the surrounding tissue and the appearance of spots. The ideal approach to fighting skin imperfections involves combining several actions. Sebum secretion should be reduced and the clogging of pores prevented. Inflammation should be alleviated and an antibacterial barrier created. Finally, the skin’s ability to heal should be reinforced to help it repair existing damage.
